Leather restoration of a Cassette by Bottega Veneta

The Cassette by Bottega Veneta is a luxury bag with a distinctly contemporary character: soft, unstructured, essential in its lines, and instantly recognisable through the iconic maxi intreccio that defines its identity. It is precisely this fluidity and richness of material that makes every restoration particularly delicate.

Before: the exterior

Before: metal parts

Before: the interior
The restoration was approached through a highly calibrated conservation process, shaped by the bag’s own characteristics. Every piece requires a bespoke intervention: the materials, the tension of the leather, the construction, and even the way the bag responds to wear over time all inform the treatments selected and the level of intervention required.
In the case of this light-coloured Cassette, the restoration was guided by three defining elements: the softness of the woven leather, its unstructured design, and the natural friction between the leather panels caused by everyday use.

Initial assessment
The restoration began with a thorough cleaning of both the interior and exterior, using products specifically selected for soft leathers and light-coloured finishes, which are particularly sensitive to friction and prone to absorbing impurities. The aim was to restore balance and uniformity to the surface while preserving the material’s natural delicacy.

After: restoration of leather and metal parts
Unlike more structured designs, the Cassette develops a softer, more diffused pattern of wear—less concentrated on corners and edges, with only one corner of this particular piece requiring filler work, and more closely linked to the continuous movement of the woven leather and its natural flexing over time.
For this reason, the restoration was carried out through light, progressive, and minimally invasive interventions, carefully preserving the bag’s original suppleness. The process included the application of a primer, followed by colour restoration and a transparent finishing layer, before concluding with a nourishing cream designed to revive the leather without altering its inherent qualities.
For the metal hardware - intentionally minimal in the Cassette’s design - a discreet and essential cleaning was considered sufficient.

Particular care was taken to preserve the natural creases shaped by time and wear. Rather than flaws to be corrected, these soft folds are part of the bag’s story, reflecting the life it has shared with its owner. Preserving them means respecting not only the bag’s identity, but also the personal connection that has developed over time.

The final result
The restored bag
The final result is a discreet and refined restoration—one that does not erase the passage of time, but instead accompanies it with balance, preserving the Cassette’s original identity, its design, and the sophisticated softness that defines its essence.
