Iconic Handbag: The Fendi Peekaboo

The Baguette may have been the first Fendi bag that made it to ‘It Bag’ status in no time but it was certainly not the last. And while the Baguette certainly deserves the title of Iconic Handbag, we have fallen in love with a more contemporary design that’s regularly found at our atelier.

The Fendi Peekaboo made its first debut on the SS09 runway in Milan, a time when fashion revolved around ‘It bags’. With its classic lines, the Peekaboo quickly became the must-have bag of the moment. Though moments pass and fashion moves on to the next big thing with a blink of an eye, the Fendi Peekaboo proved it could stand the test of time when it made a come back in 2014. And becoming the official winner of Vogue’s It Bag Of The Year next. There is a reason why a Peekaboo dangles from the arm of at least one fashion editor or streetstyle star every fashion week.

Looking at the Peekaboo design it’s clear that Silvia Venturini Fendi- Adele Fendi’s granddaughter and Fendi’s now Creative Director of Accessories- designed the bag with timelessness in mind. The signature “kangaroo pouch” opening on both sides of the bag is instantly recognisable. It has a double clasp closure and a leather section in the middle and is available in sizes micro, mini, regular and large so there is a fit for everyone. Venturini even designed a Men’s version as well as a special edition called Monster Eyes – where a pair of angry yellow eyes takes a peek at you over the opening of the bag. The practical and discreet design of the bag makes it perfect for every day or office wear. The practicality as well as luxurious leathers and materials highly contribute to the Peekaboo’s staying power. The Peekaboo is available in buttery soft calfskin to patchwork beading and even mink and studded leather. As cherry on the cake you can now also request for your very own made to order Fendi Peekaboo at select boutiques. There is an endless colour palette, unique embroidery options and exotic leathers to ponder over and to quote Fendi: you can really turn that handbag dream into a reality.

At a young age, Silvia Venturini was inspired by Fendi’s private salon where the most elaborate beaded and embroidered evening bags were kept safe in a round grey velvet upholstered room. So it comes as no surprise that Fendi’s present day accessories are heavily adorned with a maximalist flair. Venturini is never pleased with just the practical and functional aspect of a handbag. There has to be an element of surprise and playfulness to her designs. And who doesn’t want a bag that puts a smile on your face?

This year, Fendi is celebrating the Peekaboo’s 10th anniversary with a special video where Silvia Fendi and her daughters talk about the Peekaboo and its versatility but most unanimously about its timelessness in #MeAndMyPeekaboo. Very fittingly, the Peekaboo is a bag to be cherished and passed down generations just like every iconic handbag should be. So make sure to take care of your Fendi Peekaboo in the best possible way by scheduling a regular service at The Restory. Our artisans can nourish the leather and retouch worn corners or handles so your Peekaboo is kept in shape for future endeavours, as this icon will never go out of style.
